There’s nothing quite like time with your brother. Jarrah* and his younger brother Kai* recently spent an afternoon out together, sharing laughs, a bit of mischief and plenty of smiles. It was a good day.
At Aus Care Community Services, we’re proud to support both brothers through Social & Community Access across Liverpool and Western Sydney.
Why Culturally Safe Support Matters for First Nations Families
Jarrah and Kai are proud Aboriginal young people. Family, culture and community sit at the heart of who they are.
But getting to days like this hasn’t always been easy. Like many First Nations families, they found it hard to find a service that truly understood their culture: the importance of family and kinship, connection to community, and support that feels safe and respectful.
Culturally safe support means families don’t have to explain or defend who they are. It means listening, respecting cultural values and understanding that for many First Nations families, wellbeing is shared across the whole family and community.
Social & Community Access That Builds Connection
When a family trusts you with one of their children, it’s a privilege. When they trust you with two, it means everything.
Because we support both brothers, their outings can be something they share together, not just time apart with separate support workers. Jarrah and Kai love heading out to the farm and exploring waterfalls around NSW, getting outdoors, trying new things and making memories side by side.
For many First Nations families, time on Country and in nature is an important part of wellbeing. Outings like these build confidence, independence and belonging, and the brothers get to enjoy them together.
In Jarrah’s Words
“The support workers I’ve had over the years have been great. I can’t thank you enough for the support you’ve been providing.”
– Jarrah*
Supporting First Nations Families Across Liverpool and Western Sydney
We listen first. We work alongside families so support fits their culture, their community and the way they want to live, and we connect them with the right supports and services.
We support participants and families across Liverpool, Fairfield, Cabramatta and surrounding Western Sydney suburbs.
Thank you to Jarrah, Kai and their family for letting us share their story. We feel lucky to have been part of their journey over the years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is culturally safe NDIS support?
Support that respects a person’s culture, identity and values. For First Nations families, this often means recognising the importance of family, kinship and community, so people feel respected and understood.
What is Social & Community Access?
Support that helps participants take part in community, social and recreational activities, building confidence and independence. In NDIS plans, this is funded as social, community and civic participation.
What kinds of outings can Social & Community Access include?
Anything from visiting farms and exploring waterfalls to sport, cultural events, shopping or catching up with friends. Support is built around what each participant enjoys.
Can siblings be supported by the same NDIS provider?
Yes. If siblings each have their own NDIS plan, they can choose the same provider, which can mean shared outings that strengthen family connection.
How do I find a culturally safe NDIS provider for Aboriginal families in Liverpool?
Ask providers how they support First Nations participants, whether their team has cultural training, and whether they involve family in planning. A good provider will welcome these questions.
