NDIS rules are changing in stages from 2026 to 2028. This article reflects information available on 17 September 2026. Check the NDIS website or speak to the NDIA for the latest information.

One of the most common questions we hear is: “How many hours of support do I get?” The tricky part is that most NDIS plans don’t list hours. They list a dollar amount. Here’s how to turn that into hours you can plan around.

Where personal care funding sits in your plan

Help with everyday tasks like showering, dressing, meals and household tasks is usually funded under Assistance with Daily Life, in your Core Supports budget. Core Supports are usually flexible, so this funding can often be used alongside other flexible Core categories.

Why your plan shows dollars, not hours

The number of hours your funding covers depends on:

  • Your provider’s rates. Providers set their prices, up to the maximum limits in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements.
  • When you get support. Evening, weekend and public holiday rates are higher than weekday daytime rates.
  • How you’re supported. One-to-one support costs more per hour than group support.
  • Other costs. Some agreements include provider travel or other charges.
  • Your funding periods. If your plan releases funding in periods, you’ll need to spread support across each one.

How to work out your hours

  1. Find your Assistance with Daily Life (or Core Supports) amount in your plan.
  2. Ask your provider for their hourly rates for the days and times you need support.
  3. Work out your weekly cost, e.g. weekday hours × weekday rate, plus weekend hours × weekend rate.
  4. Multiply by the number of weeks in your plan or funding period.
  5. Compare it with your funding, and leave a buffer for extra or unexpected support.

Your provider should be able to give you a written schedule of supports that shows this clearly.

What if my funding doesn’t cover the hours I need?

  • Look at when you’re getting support. Moving some support to weekday times can stretch funding.
  • Check whether other supports, like assistive technology or capacity building, could reduce the support you need over time.
  • If your needs have increased significantly and for the long term, you may need a plan reassessment (who can request one →). Gather evidence, such as a functional capacity assessment from an occupational therapist, that explains the support you need.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NDIS give me a set number of personal care hours?

Usually not. Most plans show a funding amount. The hours it covers depend on your provider’s rates and when you receive support.

Why do weekend hours use more funding?

Support on evenings, weekends and public holidays is priced higher than weekday daytime support.

What happens if I run out of funding early?

Talk to your provider and a Care Navigator as soon as possible. If your needs have changed significantly, a plan reassessment may be an option.
